Keeping Pedestrians Safe on the Road

The temps outside are warming up, which means summer is almost here! With the weather becoming nicer and more enjoyable, outdoor parks and attractions are seeing an influx of visitors. And with lots going on, there will of course be more pedestrians sharing the roadways with drivers. We here at USA Collision Centers have unfortunately seen our fair share of accidents result in costly damages, especially during the warm weather season. In hopes of keeping pedestrians safe on the road this time of year and beyond, we've compiled a list of tips for drivers.

Be Aware and Stay Alert

Look out for walkers, joggers and bike riders at all times when on the road. This is especially important when driving through congested intersections known to attract pedestrian foot traffic. Limit distractions and stay focused on what you're doing. A little attention could save a life.

Pay Attention to Signage

Traffic signals and road signs serve purposes, so they should be observed in order to make roadways safer for both drivers and pedestrians. Make sure you're watching out for changes in speed limit and/or pedestrian crossings so you know when to slow down and when to use extra caution. MPH tends to be slower near museums, parks and other places that draw walkers.

Replace Dull/Dim Lights

Pedestrians will need to be able to see you and you'll need to be able to see them. To ensure visibility, check your headlights, taillights and turn signals. The bulbs may need to be changed. Also make sure you're using the appropriate brightness for the weather conditions you're driving in. Good thing is most newer model cars, trucks and SUVs come equipped with lights that automatically adjust.

Besides yielding at crosswalks, slowing down near intersections and keeping your eyes peeled for pedestrians, never under any circumstances drive under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or certain medications. Let’s keep our shared roadways safe for everyone.
